Assignment: Global Art – An environmental exhibition on a world scale.

An entry I made for the ReGeneration contest
For this part of the assignment I have chosen to present an exhibition of others artwork. These artworks have been generated through the use of the Graffiti application, found on the global social networking website Facebook. When I think about it, this is probably one of the largest international communities I am an active participant in. The amount of technical and aesthetic information and commentary that accompanies so many of the artworks generated through this online application has been an invaluable resource with regards to informing my own work and learning, and what is so fantastic is that the basis of this information and interaction is constantly evolving and archiving. There are numerous themed competitions posted up on the Graffiti application profile page which any user may enter. Prizes often include Wacom or Bamboo pen tablets and high quality large-scale printed reproductions of artworks. The competitions often center around common global ideas such as technology, nature, space… Through the “ReGeneration” contest, users were asked the question “What does green mean to you?”. The following are some works from numerous Facebook users around the world, there were 7,303 entires and 1,000,000 votes were cast. Here is a selection of 20 works from the Top 150. At any time, any user, may submit any work to the public international gallery for some kind of feedback, a thumbs up thumbs down rating or simply the opportunity to share artwork and ideas with other worldwide users.

About: The Graffiti application was developed by Mark Kantor, Ted Suzman, and Tim Suzman and allows users to draw images and generate messages on others users profile pages. These images can be drawn in real-time using either a mouse or a pen tablet. The application also has a type of non-destructive editing feature which allows the user to back track and undo any unwanted modifications. There is also a full spectrum colour palette available and the ability to alter line weight and diameter. At the completion of any given work, the Replay function allows users to see the formative stages of development of the image or text. This application and similar ones also feature on other international social networking sites such as Bebo, MySpace, and Twitter.
